AUDREY HEPBURN BIOPIC PROJECT
DESIGN & MAKING
This project entailed careful, thorough research and observation of a historical figure's life and wardrobe. I selected Audrey Hepburn to research and design for. Five key moments and corresponding outfits from her life were chosen to create mood boards and designs from. It was important to consider colour matching, silhouette recreation and accessories in this project. An additional scenario and costume was designed, this needed to embed seamlessly into actual outfits from her life. I created the "Audrey in the gardens" look; this would be worn in a scene following her first Oscar win in 1954 at the Kew Gardens. It consists of a day dress, bolero jacket, marching red beret and shoes. As a carry-over from her 1954 Oscars dress, she is wearing the same pearl earrings. I went on to make this costume for my second year final construction project.
01
DESIGN PROCESS
After conducting careful investigation into Hepburn's life and annotating her wardrobe thoroughly, I built the tone and setting of the costume through mood boards. Then the final designs could be completed, making sure to use plenty of reference photos from multiple angles where possible. The designs are gouache and pastel, formatted in photoshop.
02
MAKING PROCESS
I used modern pattern drafting references for this project, with period appropriate research references to ensure the believability of fasteners, dart placement etc. Colour matching the varying reds in this costume was satisfying, as was working with genuine Harris Tweed for the bolero jacket. These quality fabric choices were important for a screen production.
